GOLF ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

April 7, 2011

The meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm. Present were Joe Jacangelo, Bill McCrain, Dennis Igoe, Bob Mazzei, Tom Lewis, Steve Naples, Paul Squeri, Monica DeCicco, Jim Inzalaco, Al Regen, Jeff Babbino, Mike Tardogno, and Ryan Phelps.

Director of Golf Report

Pace of play enforcement is going well.  Rules will be communicated to the membership and penalties for abuse of rangers will be implemented.

Carts were moved to a different spot, the bag drop was moved and the starter has a new location.  On cart path only days the starter will explain to golfers why it is cart path only before they tee off and carts with handicap flags must obey the CPO rules.  Jeff believes that the new procedures will make for a more professional and proficient operation and a more pleasant golfing experience.

New handicap flags have been obtained and must be signed out when issued and returned at the end of the round.

PGA testing (players are tested on their playing ability) will be at GOGC on October 3, 2011.  Jeff is amenable to reciprocity with other clubs in the area and with BCG locations.  He believes we have a phenomenal course and we should show it off with events like this and with guests.

A ball storage bin is being built for the range balls.  Individuals will get a basket of balls and go to a slot.  Some slots may be reserved for those about to tee off so they have an opportunity to hit a few balls to warm up before teeing off.

Course Superintendent Report

Mike discussed cutting grass in the basins and in particular the hardwoods which can be cut out without mowing.  Rakes are to be out of the sand traps.

Work on the course has produced good results.  The greens are firming up and smoothing out as a result of top dressing.  Greens will be aerated at the end of April.  Fertilizing has been done at night to spark growth and improve plant health.  Starting April 11 liquid fertilizer will be used to promote growth of microbes which reduce the organisms in the thatch and fungicides will be used to aid in plant growth and vigor.

Mike is definitely against more than two golf carts per foursome since turf health is greatly impacted by tire tracks.  He noted that cart usage per round is 90% whereas the norm is 50%.  Cart path only signs will be used to remind players when this is in effect.  During the rainy season it is extremely important not to mow over tire tracks because it will damage the turf and take extra time resulting in extra money and manpower.

Mike introduced his assistant, Mike Miles.

Tournament Sub-committee

It was decided that no age consideration will be given; handicap of record will be used.  Jeff noted USGA governs play, and one can’t change the rules of golf.  Rule sheets specific to issues like playing out of trees will be handed out before tournaments.  Jeff will have final say rules questions.

General Discussion

Cigarette and cigar smoking was discussed.  There was a consensus that courtesy cannot be dictated, but reminders can be posted.  Members can buy portable ash trays at the dollar store.

A proposal to try Family and Friends Day was reviewed and will be sent to the board.

Sand bottles for walkers, which are smaller and lighter, will be purchased.

Al Regen presented number of paying members.  Membership is slightly down, but about normal for this time of year.

The design of hole number 2 was discussed.  The basin is a lateral hazard and a ball on the rocks is considered unplayable and a penalty stroke is taken if the ball is moved.  No free lift.  The ladies tee will be beautified in the future.

There was agreement that fees must be based on the needs of the budget.

Meeting adjourned at 5:58 PM.
